Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks to hold annual street fair

October 11, 2014

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The 23rd annual Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks Street Fair will showcase more than 370 vendors while generating funds for more than 70 local and international charities.

"It's unique that one funding source ends up dispersing to a number of charitable sources both locally and on an international level," said Mario Contini, of the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks. "Also, it provides a wholesome family event for the community; these are two primary purposes of the event."

The fair will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 on Moorpark Road at the Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks.

For the first time, all vendor spaces sold out a month early this year, leaving a waiting list of 50, officials said.

"This year, they filled up fast; we're really happy," said Contini, that noting awareness is spread mainly through word of mouth.

"The vendors are hearing from one another that this is a tremendous event and they've got to come."

This year also generated a 50 percent increase in sponsorship support, officials said.

"Last year was a record for sponsorship ... and we're more than 50 percent above what we had last year," Contini said. "We're really getting a lot of support that goes back into the community."

This year's event will feature a car dealership and three motorcycle dealerships, as well as food and live entertainment on two stages.

"The vendors also offer a whole variety of arts and crafts and jewelry and clothing," Contini said.

A Rotary booth will offer education about the club's international effort to eradicate polio, alongside exhibitors such as the Ventura County Fire Department, Ventura County Sheriff's Office and Thousand Oaks Transit.

"And then there are the public service organizations, schools and park district ... and a number of nonprofits that are going to be there," Contini said.

More than 100 volunteers will help set up and disassemble vendor displays, among other tasks.

The annual street fair is one of three major fundraisers for the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks, in addition to a yearly chili cook-off and midsummer night wine festival.
