Chinese numerology forecasts lucky future for twins born in August

When Brody and Brooklyn Hinks were born on Aug. 8, 2008, at 8 and 8:01 a.m., the parents of the twins could not help but marvel at the prompting of the number associated in China with prosperity and good luck.

"Everyone tries to get married on dates like 7-7-7 because it's very rare," said daddy Josh Hinks, 34, assistant director of sales for the Crowne Plaza in Ventura.

He noted the Beijing Olympic Games, which were scheduled to start on 8-8-08 at 08:08:08 p.m. to coincide with the ancient Chinese belief that the number eight is considered lucky — just like the number seven is a symbol of good luck in the U.S.

"As the Olympics came close and the numerology came up I thought, Oh man, how bitchin' would it be to have a birthday on 8-8-8,'" Josh said. "It's something I just thought would be really cool and then when they came out healthy at 8 in the morning, it was just awesome."

His wife, April, knows nothing about numerology. Rather, it was at the urging of her husband that the number eight became relevant in regard to the twins.

"I've never been the type of person who believes in stuff like that," said April, 31, director of special events at the Boys & Girls Club of Ventura. "My husband was very adamant. He knew we weren't going to be able to go all the 40 weeks to deliver. He was looking at the calendar and said, What about 8-8-08?' I was thinking, Hmmm, that's interesting,' because everyone made such a big deal about 7-7-7 last year."

The doctor's appointment was made for 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 8; with prep time, the 8 and 8:01 arrival times occurred — relatively — naturally.

The twins came into the world at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura; baby Brody weighed in at 6 pounds 12 ounces and measured 20 1/2 inches, while his sister, Brooklyn, weighed 6 pounds and measured 20 1/4 inches.

So far, "they're really healthy; everything's going smooth at home," said Josh, adding that the family's other daughter, 3-year-old Avril, has also taken to the twins.

"She's accepted them and she's helping out," Josh said. "She loves them and kisses them and feeds them. That's lucky, too."

Working the numbers

As unbelievable as it may seem to some, numerologists believe deeply that each of us is born with a specific destiny and a specific set of personality traits and characteristics that are, at least in this life, as unchangeable and predictable as the compositions of the basic chemical elements.

"Numerology is the ancient science and art of numbers, which defines and describes our lives and destinies," said Richard Andrew King, a numerologist and author of "The King's Book of Numerology: Volume 1: Foundations & Fundamentals" and "The King's Book of Numerology II: Forecasting — Part 1," among other titles.

"Each of our lives — as these children born on Aug. 8, 2008 — maintains a strict structure and order," said King, who lives in Aliso Viejo, Calif.

"We do not move randomly about this Earth from birth to death," he said. "As the famous scientist, mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras said some 2,500 years ago: Numbers rule the universe. Everything is arranged according to number and mathematical shape.'"

Both existential and literal, King said he finds it interesting that so much fuss is made over dates such as Aug. 8, 2008 — "because it's not really 8-8-8. It's really 8-8-2008; the only time this 8-8-8 occurred was on 8 August in the year 0008. This was the only true 8-8-8."

That said, Aug. 8, 2008, carries a life path of eight. "Were we to add each component specifically, we would have: 2008 plus 8 plus 8 equals 2024," King said. "In reduction (adding the digits in 2024), this would equal an 8."

What does it all mean?

"This 2024/8 arrangement indicates a life concentrated in relationship, work, structure and commerce," King said.

Additionally, an 8 life path in numerology depicts a life of social integration, interaction, commerce, management, organization, orchestration, administration, manipulation, comfort, worldly success or failure.

"All numbers have both a positive and negative aspect," King said. "Therefore, these individuals will be involved in and fully engulfed in life lessons relating to these issues for the whole of the life. Any person whose birthdate data equal an 8 will share these same attributes in a general sense."

This could be a very challenging life path for these children, King emphasized. However, "there is so much to a chart that it's impossible to get a reliable read on the life of the individual at this point given only a birthdate," he said. "Every one of our lives is a book, and it would take a book to detail everyone's life."

Tarot cards underscore the significance of the number 8 with a card called the magician, in which the number floats above the character's head representing eternity as the 8 has no beginning and no end, said Leslie Sloane, 49, a former Ventura County resident who received her first deck of tarot cards at age 12 and has since done extensive studies of mystic teachings.

The number 8 "is a sign of internal and external power and the ability to manifest greatness through complete abundance," Sloane said.

The 15-day-old babes may not know it yet, but, Josh joked, he is already planning his retirement based on this information and their anticipated success.

"They're going to be multimillionaires and take care of Daddy," he said.
